Tools for Writers: Editing

02/09/2018

Editing your work can be difficult - many writers struggling with editing. But, if you want your work to shine, then you need to edit until it hurts. You can employ a professional editor to clean up your work, or you can explore the range of tools available to help you.

Grammarly is a free tool that will help you spot and correct your grammatical mistakes as you go along. I tend to rely on the checkers in Word, and my English degree, but if you do need a grammar checker, this is one that you could try.

Thesaurus: If you have overused the same word, and its not intentional, a good thesaurus will help you find alternative words to use. I like to use: the Oxford one: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/english-thesaurus but I also still have a copy of Roget on my bookshelf

Dictionary: if you don't know how to spell a word, a dictionary is not much help - a spell checker is better (but not infallible) A dictionary can help you confirm that a spelling is correct, and give you meanings of words, as well as their origins. I tend to use either Cambridge or Oxford dictionaries, as I write in the UK, but if you are writing for US markets, you could use Websters instead.

Cliché Finder:

This site allows you to paste in your text, and then checks to see whether you have used any clichés, and once identified, you can remove them to make your writing fresh rather than dull and uninspired.

Hemingway editor is an app helps identify weak writing, long sentences, where your meaning is unclear, etc. It's a great tool that can help you improve and develop your writing, but it's not free. A free alternative is Polishmywriting.

It's great to have tools, but remember - you will also need to read and check your work. It's best to leave it a while before doing this, but you will be amazed to see the errors you spot!
