Writing Prompts: Calls for Submissions
Another great way of finding topics to write about is to look at what journals want. Many of them put out a 'call for submissions' to let writers know they are open for new works, and if there is anything specific they want, such as themed pieces for a particular issue.
These Calls for Submissions can be a tool for inspiration, as they give a deadline to add to your motivation, and often give a theme, or specifics of what they want. Of course, there is an increased chance of being published, as you're writing what they want. Pay close attention though to make sure your story complies with the guidelines they provide, and the style of the magazine.
How do you find out about Calls for Submissions?
There are too many journals to follow them all, but there are also a number of websites that will alert you to new calls for submissions.
Publishing and Other Forms of Insanity
This is my go- to site for any information on markets for publishing. They do a monthly blog that lists new Calls for Submissions, as well as having lists of sites that accept different types of work. They list free competitions to enter, and if you sign up, you'll get their regular newsletter with a range of opportunities and helpful articles. Thanks to @EricaVerrillo
Submittable is an online submissions manager that is used by a wide range of journals to accept work. If you've been submitting for a while, you probably already have a free account. They also have a 'Discover' option, where you can search for journals looking for work, and can filter by the type of story or work wanted. There is a regular newsletter which showcases opportunities for writers, but in my experience, those calls for submission usually have a submissions fee. Submittable is a great tool for managing the work you submit.
This is a site I've discovered recently, and they focus on more literary journals. They also have a section on calls for submissions, and list literary journals looking for work.
There are a lot of people who tweet about writing opportunities. It's worth finding ones you like, and following them. I currently follow: @WritingComps101
and @WritingCompt
among others.
And if you don't find anything to inspire you on those sites, there are a number of others you can try:
I hope these help you find inspiration, and take a step closer to publication. Happy Writing!
