Writing Prompts: Story & Idea generators

03/17/2019

Staring at a blank piece of paper waiting for the ideas to come is incredibly frustrating. Today's blog looks at two tools you can use to generate either a story idea, or a plotline.

Plot Generator

This tool asks a series of questions, and once you've completed them, generates a story plot line for you to flesh out and develop. If you can't come up with options for each question, you can use the suggest option to provide you with the words. I landed up with this story:

The Valuable Knife

Mary Jones looked at the valuable knife in her hands and felt hurt.

She walked over to the window and reflected on her independent surroundings. She had always loved quirky Brighton with its squealing, sad sea. It was a place that encouraged her tendency to feel hurt.

Then she saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Jason Wright. Jason was an intuitive banker with wobbly eyebrows and fat feet.

Mary gulped. She glanced at her own reflection. She was a vibrant, intelligent, earl grey drinker with feathery eyebrows and dirty feet. Her friends saw her as a bad, blushing bear. Once, she had even helped a mammoth child cross the road.

But not even a vibrant person who had once helped a mammoth child cross the road, was prepared for what Jason had in store today.

The sun shone like rampaging lizards, making Mary tired.

As Mary stepped outside and Jason came closer, she could see the greasy smile on his face.

Jason glared with all the wrath of 6788 brave small seagulls. He said, in hushed tones, "I hate you and I want revenge."

Mary looked back, even more tired and still fingering the valuable knife. "Jason, why did you do it," she replied.

They looked at each other with angry feelings, like two mouldy, magnificent monkeys jumping at a very friendly accident, which had classical music playing in the background and two charming uncles boating to the beat.

Mary regarded Jason's wobbly eyebrows and fat feet. "I feel the same way!" revealed Mary with a delighted grin.

Jason looked loving, his emotions blushing like a racid, regurgitated rock.

Then Jason came inside for a nice drink of earl grey.

THE END

It's not a brilliant story, but it has seeds that I can use to generate something feasible. Also, once you've seen the results, you can go back and change your options to create a new story.

Story Idea Generator

This site produces a range of story ideas, and you can click on the options to provide you with more ideas. Below is one of my results:

In a world where robots make the rules, one presenter has no choice but to assasinate an honorable man using an enchanted sword. Unfortunately, the world gets into a terrible pickle and the few survivors have to leave in a space rocket.

The other option this site provides is a genre plot generator. If you want to try your hand at a new genre, it's a way to begin.

I hope you find these tools helpful! Have fun with your writing.
